Gluten-Free vs. Vegan Skincare: What’s the Difference?

Gluten-free and vegan skincare are often mentioned together, but they describe two very different formulation choices. Gluten-free relates to gluten-containing grain ingredients, while vegan relates to ingredients derived from animals. Understanding that difference makes it easier to choose products that truly match your ingredient preferences, values, and skincare routine.

The Simple Answer

Is Gluten-Free Skincare the Same as Vegan Skincare?

No. Gluten-free and vegan skincare describe different characteristics of a cosmetic formula.

Gluten-free skincare generally refers to formulas made without gluten-containing ingredients derived from grains such as wheat, barley, rye, or related gluten-containing grain sources.

Vegan skincare means the formula is made without animal-derived ingredients.

A product can therefore be gluten-free but not vegan, vegan but not gluten-free, both gluten-free and vegan, or neither.

Bottom line: gluten-free tells you about certain grain-derived ingredients; vegan tells you about animal-derived ingredients. One does not automatically guarantee the other.

Glimmer Goddess® maintains a strictly vegan formulation standard. Shoppers who also prefer formulas made without gluten-containing ingredients can explore our Gluten-Free Skincare Collection.

What Does Gluten-Free Skincare Mean?

A Gluten-Conscious Formulation Choice

Gluten-free skincare generally refers to formulas made without gluten-containing ingredients derived from wheat, barley, rye, triticale, or related sources.

For many shoppers, this is simply a way to keep their beauty routine aligned with their personal ingredient preferences.

Not the Same as FDA Food Labeling

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a formal gluten-free definition for foods.

That food-labeling standard does not automatically become a cosmetic certification standard for ordinary skincare products.

For the complete definition, read What Is Gluten-Free Skincare?.

What Does Vegan Skincare Mean?

No Animal-Derived Ingredients

A vegan formula is made without ingredients derived from animals.

Often Plant-Focused

Vegan skincare may rely on botanical oils, plant extracts, minerals, plant-derived emollients, synthetic alternatives, and other non-animal ingredient sources.

Different From Cruelty-Free

Vegan describes ingredients. Cruelty-free describes animal-testing practices. The terms are related but are not interchangeable.

Which Ingredients Can Make a Skincare Product Non-Vegan?

Ingredient sourcing matters. Examples of ingredients that are traditionally animal-derived can include:

Beeswax

Produced by bees and commonly used to add structure, richness, or an occlusive feel to cosmetic formulas.

Lanolin

Traditionally obtained from sheep's wool and used as an emollient or conditioning ingredient.

Carmine

A red pigment traditionally produced from insects and commonly associated with color cosmetics.

Animal-Derived Collagen

Traditional collagen can come from animal sources. Vegan formulations use non-animal ingredient strategies instead.

Glimmer Goddess® vegan standard: we do not use carmine, cochineal-derived colorants, beeswax, lanolin, animal-derived collagen, shellac, or other animal-derived ingredients in our formulations.

Is Glimmer Goddess® Vegan?

Yes. Glimmer Goddess® maintains a strictly vegan formulation standard.

Our formulas are made without animal-derived ingredients, and vegan formulation is a brand-wide standard rather than a claim limited to selected products.

Glimmer Goddess® also maintains a cruelty-free beauty commitment, while recognizing that vegan and cruelty-free describe different things.

Can Skincare Be Both Gluten-Free and Vegan?

Absolutely. These attributes describe different parts of the formulation, so a single product can satisfy both standards.

Gluten-Free + Vegan

Made without gluten-containing ingredients and without animal-derived ingredients.

Gluten-Free + Non-Vegan

Made without gluten-containing ingredients but may still contain an animal-derived ingredient such as beeswax or lanolin.

Vegan + Not Gluten-Free

Contains no animal-derived ingredients but may still contain a wheat-, barley-, rye-, or related grain-derived ingredient.

Neither

May contain both animal-derived ingredients and gluten-related grain ingredients.

Because Glimmer Goddess® is fully vegan, products in our Gluten-Free Skincare Collection combine both attributes: qualifying formulas are vegan and made without gluten-containing ingredients.

Can Vegan Skincare Still Contain Gluten?

Yes. Vegan tells you whether animal-derived ingredients are present. It does not tell you whether an ingredient comes from wheat, barley, rye, or another plant source.

Vegan Is About Animal Origin

A wheat-derived ingredient can be completely vegan because wheat is a plant.

Gluten-Free Is About Grain Source

A vegan shopper who also prefers gluten-conscious formulas still needs to review the grain-derived ingredients separately.

Learn which grain-derived cosmetic terms to recognize in Gluten-Free Skincare Ingredients: What to Look For.

Can Gluten-Free Skincare Still Contain Animal-Derived Ingredients?

Yes. Gluten-free does not automatically mean vegan.

Example

A skincare formula could contain no wheat-, barley-, or rye-derived ingredients but still use beeswax, lanolin, shellac, or another animal-derived ingredient.

That formula could be gluten-free while still being non-vegan.

Read Both Claims Separately

If both attributes matter to you, verify both instead of assuming one label automatically covers the other.

Gluten-free and vegan answer two different questions.

Does Someone With Celiac Disease Need Vegan Skincare?

No. Vegan skincare and celiac disease are separate topics.

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is related to an immune response triggered by ingesting gluten.

Whether a skincare ingredient is animal-derived does not determine whether it is relevant to celiac disease.

Vegan Formulation

Vegan formulation addresses animal-derived ingredients.

It does not tell you whether the formula includes gluten-related grain ingredients.

For the celiac-specific discussion, read Does Skincare Need to Be Gluten Free? and Can Gluten Be Absorbed Through Your Skin?.

Vegan vs. Cruelty-Free: Are They the Same?

No. These terms are also commonly confused.

Vegan

Describes the ingredients used in the formula: no animal-derived ingredients.

Cruelty-Free

Describes a brand or product's approach to animal testing.

A product can theoretically be vegan without automatically establishing its cruelty-free status, or cruelty-free without being vegan. Glimmer Goddess® commits to both through our Cruelty-Free & Vegan Promise.

Gluten-Free, Vegan, Cruelty-Free & Organic: Four Different Ideas

Gluten-Free

Addresses gluten-containing ingredients or grain-derived sources in the formulation.

Vegan

Addresses whether the formula contains ingredients derived from animals.

Cruelty-Free

Addresses animal-testing practices rather than ingredient origin.

Organic

Relates to the sourcing, agricultural production, handling, or certification of qualifying ingredients.

Important: none of these terms automatically guarantees the others. A skincare product may meet one, several, all, or none of these standards.

How to Shop for Vegan, Gluten-Conscious Skincare

1. Decide Which Standards Matter to You

Are you avoiding animal-derived ingredients, gluten-containing ingredients, or both? Knowing your priorities makes labels easier to interpret.

2. Read the Entire Ingredient List

Do not assume a vegan product is gluten-free or that a gluten-free product is vegan.

3. Look for Clear Brand Standards

Transparent brands should explain whether vegan formulation is a brand-wide standard or limited to individual products.

4. Review the Complete Formula

Vegan and gluten-free labels do not replace the need to choose textures and ingredients appropriate for your skin.

5. Ask When Something Is Unclear

Ingredient sourcing can vary, so contact the manufacturer when you need additional product-specific information.

6. Choose Products You Will Enjoy Using

Your values matter, but so do texture, comfort, performance, and the enjoyment of your everyday skincare ritual.

For Vegan Criteria

Does Gluten-Free or Vegan Automatically Mean Better for Sensitive Skin?

No. Neither label guarantees that a formula will be right for every sensitive skin type.

Ingredient Standards Are One Part of the Formula

A product can be gluten-free and vegan while still containing an ingredient that your individual skin does not tolerate well.

The Whole Formula Matters

Texture, botanical extracts, essential oils, preservatives, active ingredients, concentrations, and individual sensitivity all influence product suitability.

How Do Vegan and Gluten-Free Products Fit Into a Complete Skincare Routine?

These labels describe formulation standards—not product order.

You still build a skincare routine according to product function: cleanser first, then targeted treatment steps, moisturizer, and body care as appropriate.
