Gradual Tanning Lotion: How to Get a Natural-Looking Tan
A gradual tanning lotion can give skin a warmer, sun-kissed appearance without intentionally tanning in UV light. The goal is not to “fix” pale skin—every natural skin tone is valid. Sunless tanner is simply an optional cosmetic way to change the appearance of your skin temporarily.
What makes a tan look natural?
A believable sunless tan is usually more about even application and gradual buildup than dramatic color on day one. Rough, dry areas can grab more product, so preparation matters.
Prepare skin without over-exfoliating
Gently exfoliate areas that tend to be rough, such as elbows, knees and ankles. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, especially if skin is irritated, freshly shaved or already sensitive. Apply tanner to clean, dry skin unless the product directions say otherwise.
Use less on dry areas
Elbows, knees, knuckles and ankles often develop darker because the outer skin is thicker and drier. Use a lighter hand in those areas and blend carefully. Wash your palms after application or use a tanning mitt.
What does DHA-free tanning mean?
DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is the color additive used in many conventional self tanners. FDA permits DHA for external application under its color-additive regulations. A DHA-free formula simply uses a different tanning approach; DHA-free should not be interpreted as proof that every DHA formula is unsafe.
Glimmer Goddess® DHA Free Self Tanner for Sensitive Skin – Glow uses erythrulose and is designed to build gradually over roughly 3–5 days. The live catalog currently includes Regular and Dark options, with lightly scented and unscented choices.
Build color gradually
- Apply a thin, even layer.
- Let the product dry before dressing.
- Follow the formula's directions for bathing and reapplication.
- Add another application only when you want more depth.
- Reduce frequency once you reach your preferred shade.
A sunless tan is not sunscreen
This is one of the most important points in any self-tanning routine. Cosmetic color does not mean your skin is protected from UV radiation. FDA requires a warning on tanning products without sunscreen because a sunless tan does not protect against sunburn.
Continue using broad-spectrum sunscreen and other sun-protective measures. For more detail, see DHA-Free Self Tanner: What It Means & How to Use It.
FAQ
Should I choose a shade much darker than my skin?
If your goal is a subtle result, gradual buildup is usually easier to control than trying to jump several shades at once.
Can I tan over irritated skin?
It is better to wait until skin is calm. Applying cosmetic products over irritated or broken skin can sting and create uneven results.
Does self tanner prevent sunburn?
No. Use a properly labeled sunscreen for UV protection.

Historical note
The original title framed naturally pale skin as something to “say goodbye” to. This update removes that value judgment and focuses on optional, safer-looking cosmetic tanning habits.
