Article: Tea Tree Oil for Hair & Scalp: What the Evidence Really Shows

Tea tree oil and hair care featured in an evidence-based guide to scalp care and hair-growth claims.

Tea Tree Oil for Hair & Scalp: What the Evidence Really Shows

Tea tree oil is a concentrated essential oil often used in scalp and personal-care products. It may contribute a fresh sensory feel and has antimicrobial properties in laboratory settings, but that does not make it a proven hair-growth treatment.

Does tea tree oil grow hair?

There is not good clinical evidence that tea tree oil alone makes hair follicles grow faster or reverses common forms of hair loss. Claims that it “unclogs follicles,” increases scalp circulation or directly stimulates new growth go beyond what current evidence supports.

What does the evidence support?

NCCIH reports limited evidence for certain topical uses of tea tree oil, including some skin conditions, but says there is not enough evidence for many other proposed uses. Hair growth is not an established benefit.

Tea tree oil and the scalp

A properly formulated rinse-off or leave-on scalp product may be enjoyable for people who like tea tree oil, but scalp symptoms such as persistent flaking, sores, pain or patchy hair loss can have many causes and should not automatically be self-treated with essential oils.

Can tea tree oil irritate skin?

Yes. NCCIH notes that topical tea tree oil can cause redness or irritation in some people. Concentrated essential oils are not automatically gentler because they are plant-derived.

Why we are not giving DIY dilution recipes

Essential-oil safety depends on concentration, vehicle, skin condition and the finished formulation. Rather than encouraging readers to improvise concentrated scalp mixtures, we recommend using properly formulated products according to label directions.

What if your concern is thinning hair?

Hair loss can have genetic, hormonal, inflammatory, nutritional, medication-related and other causes. If you have sudden shedding, bald patches, scalp pain or progressive thinning, a dermatologist can help identify the cause.

Historical note

The original article promised faster hair growth, better circulation and follicle stimulation from tea tree oil. Those claims have been removed because current evidence does not support them.
