Eczema vs Psoriasis: Key Differences & Gentle Skin Care

Eczema and psoriasis can look similar, but they are different inflammatory skin conditions and may require different treatment. Both can cause dry, scaly, itchy or irritated-looking skin, and appearance can vary by skin tone, body area and severity. When you are unsure which condition you have, a dermatologist is the best person to diagnose it.

Eczema vs. psoriasis: what is the difference?

Eczema is a broad term for inflammatory dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is one common type. It often causes intense itching and dry, irritated skin. Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that can cause more clearly defined, thick or scaly plaques. Location can offer clues, but it is not enough to diagnose either condition.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that the two conditions can overlap and may sometimes be difficult to distinguish, especially in children. Read the AAD's eczema-versus-psoriasis guidance.

Can diet or a detox cure eczema or psoriasis?

No single food, detox plan, supplement or elimination diet has been proven to cure either condition. Some people may notice individual triggers, but removing major food groups without a medical reason can create nutritional gaps. If you suspect a food allergy or another dietary trigger, discuss it with a qualified clinician rather than relying on a broad elimination plan or unverified testing.

Gentle skin care that can support comfort

  • Use lukewarm rather than hot water.
  • Choose a gentle cleanser and avoid scrubbing irritated areas.
  • Moisturize regularly, especially after bathing or handwashing.
  • Avoid fragranced products if fragrance seems to trigger irritation.
  • Keep nails short and try to reduce scratching, which can further injure the skin.

These steps can support the skin barrier, but they are not substitutes for medical treatment when eczema or psoriasis is active.

When professional care matters

See a healthcare professional for a new or uncertain rash, symptoms that are widespread or persistent, significant pain, cracking or bleeding, or symptoms affecting sleep and daily life. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening redness, warmth, pus, crusting, fever or other signs of infection.
