Fragrance-Free Body Lotion for Dry, Sensitive Skin
For dry or easily irritated skin, a fragrance-free body lotion can reduce one common source of exposure while adding water and emollients back to the skin. “Fragrance-free” does not mean odorless: natural ingredients may still have their own mild scent.
Fragrance-free versus unscented
The terms are often confused. An unscented product may use masking fragrance to reduce the perception of other ingredient odors, while fragrance-free means no ingredient was added to create or mask scent. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends fragrance-free rather than unscented products for eczema-prone skin.
At Glimmer Goddess®, fragrance-free means we do not add essential oils or fragrance to that variant. We also do not add a separate masking scent. Plant oils, butters, and other raw materials can still have a naturally occurring aroma.
What a useful body lotion should do
A lotion should make skin feel softer and more comfortable by combining water with ingredients that attract and hold moisture and ingredients that smooth the surface. No single ingredient guarantees a perfect fit. Formula balance, preservation, packaging, and personal tolerance all matter.
- Humectants help attract water to the outer layer of skin.
- Emollients improve softness and slip.
- Occlusive ingredients help slow water loss, which can be useful on very dry areas.

How to moisturize dry skin more effectively
- Keep showers comfortably warm rather than hot.
- Use a gentle cleanser only where needed.
- Pat skin dry instead of rubbing.
- Apply lotion within a few minutes while skin retains moisture.
- Reapply to hands, elbows, shins, or other dry areas as needed.
If lotion is not rich enough, a fragrance-free cream or body butter may provide a more occlusive feel. Our dry-skin routine guide explains how cleanser, moisturizer, and daily protection work together.
Patch testing still matters
Fragrance-free does not mean allergy-proof or universally non-irritating. Apply a small amount to a limited area for several days before broad use if your skin is reactive. Stop if you develop persistent burning, swelling, blistering, or a spreading rash.
When dry skin needs medical care
A cosmetic lotion can help with dryness but does not treat eczema, infection, or another skin disease. Seek care for painful cracking, oozing, signs of infection, severe itch, or symptoms that do not improve with gentle care.
Fragrance-free lotion FAQ
Why does a fragrance-free lotion still have a smell?
Raw ingredients have natural odors. Fragrance-free describes what is not added; it does not promise an odorless formula.
Is natural fragrance always gentler?
No. Essential oils and botanical fragrance components can irritate some people.
Can I use body lotion on my face?
Use products according to their labels. Face-specific moisturizers are generally designed for facial skin.
