Self-Tan Drops: How to Use Them for an Even Glow

Self-tan drops are concentrated sunless-tanning formulas designed to be mixed with a compatible moisturizer or used exactly as the product label directs. They let you customize intensity, but the correct drop ratio, development time and application area vary by formula.

Quick answer: Exfoliate gently in advance, start with clean dry skin, mix the labeled number of drops evenly into moisturizer, blend sparingly over joints, wash hands and allow the color to develop before getting wet. Begin conservatively and build on a later application.

How self-tan drops create color

Many sunless tanners use dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with amino acids in the outermost skin layer to create temporary color. DHA-free products may use erythrulose or another color-building approach and often develop more gradually. Neither result is a suntan, and neither protects skin from ultraviolet radiation.

The Organic Self Tan Drops – Fast Glow are the current conventional option, with lightly scented and unscented variants. The Organic DHA Free Tanning Drops – Gradual, No-Odor Glow are a separate formula. Follow the current directions on the exact product rather than transferring one ratio to the other.

Step-by-step application

  1. Patch test before the first full use.
  2. Exfoliate gently the day before, especially elbows, knees and ankles.
  3. Apply to clean, dry skin; keep heavy oils out of the mixing base.
  4. Blend the directed drops thoroughly into moisturizer in your palm.
  5. Work in sections using smooth circular motions.
  6. Use less mixture over hands, feet and joints.
  7. Wash palms and between fingers, then let skin dry before dressing.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying self-tanner in sections, blending at wrists and ankles and diluting over knees, elbows and ankles. Its self-tanner application guide also advises waiting before dressing.

How often should you use self-tan drops?

Wait for the label’s full development window before deciding whether you need more. For maintenance, reapply only when fading is visible and the skin is comfortable. Daily layering can create buildup on dry areas, so a modest schedule usually looks more even.

For the face, use only a formula directed for facial use, avoid eyes and lips, and mix carefully to prevent concentrated spots. Stop if you experience persistent burning, swelling or rash.

Keep the bottle closed between uses and store it as directed so the formula remains consistent.

Sun safety: Self-tanner does not replace sunscreen. Continue broad-spectrum SPF, shade and protective clothing even when your skin looks bronzed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply drops directly?

Only if the current product directions say so. Concentrated drops are commonly designed to be mixed, and direct application may cause uneven color.

Why are my knees darker?

Dry, thicker areas can catch more product. Moisturize them lightly first and apply less tanning mixture there.

Can I combine DHA and DHA-free drops?

Do not improvise combinations. Use one formula according to its directions so development and tolerance are predictable.
