Puffy Eyes & Dark Circles: Causes and What Can Help
Puffy under-eyes and dark circles often appear together, but they are not the same concern. Puffiness usually involves swelling or fluid in the tissues around the eyes, while dark circles can reflect pigment, visible blood vessels, shadows from under-eye hollows, genetics or a combination of factors.
What causes puffy eyes?
Temporary puffiness can be influenced by sleep, allergies, crying, fluid retention and other day-to-day factors. Age-related changes in the tissues around the eyes can also make under-eye bags more noticeable.
What causes dark circles?
Genetics, aging, fatigue, allergies, rubbing the eyes, sun-related pigmentation and natural facial structure can all contribute. Cleveland Clinic notes that dark circles are usually a cosmetic concern rather than a medical problem, although their causes vary from person to person.

Gentle things you can try
- Use a cool, comfortable compress for temporary puffiness. Do not place bare ice directly on delicate eye-area skin.
- Aim for consistent sleep when possible.
- Avoid rubbing or aggressively massaging the eye area.
- Use sunscreen and sunglasses to help limit UV-related pigmentation.
- If allergies are contributing, ask a healthcare professional or pharmacist about appropriate allergy management rather than placing unapproved products in or around the eyes.
What will not permanently erase dark circles?
No eye cream, kitchen remedy or single ingredient can guarantee permanent removal because the cause may be genetic, structural, vascular or pigment-related. Skin care can improve hydration and the appearance of the surface, but structural hollows or persistent pigmentation may require professional evaluation if they bother you.
When eye swelling needs medical care
Seek medical attention for sudden or severe swelling, significant redness, eye pain, vision changes, fever, trauma, or swelling that is clearly one-sided and unexplained. Those symptoms go beyond a typical cosmetic under-eye concern.
