Crepey Skin: Causes, Moisture, Exfoliation & Realistic Results

Crepey skin gets its name from its thin, finely wrinkled texture. It commonly appears on the arms, legs, neck and other areas where skin has become drier or less elastic with age and accumulated sun exposure.

Skincare can help crepey skin look smoother and feel more comfortable, but a lotion or scrub cannot permanently restore lost collagen or fully reverse structural skin changes.

What Causes Crepey-Looking Skin?

Several factors can contribute, often at the same time:

  • Natural aging: skin gradually becomes thinner and produces less oil.
  • Ultraviolet exposure: cumulative sun exposure contributes to photoaging and loss of elasticity.
  • Dryness: dehydrated, rough skin can make fine texture look more noticeable.
  • Weight changes and genetics: these can also influence how loose or finely wrinkled skin appears.

1. Moisturize Consistently

Moisturizer is one of the most useful cosmetic steps for crepey-looking skin because hydrated skin can appear temporarily plumper and smoother. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends creams or ointments for dry, mature skin and applying moisturizer while skin is still damp. See AAD guidance for aging skin.

Glimmer Goddess® Organic Firming Body Lotion can be used as a moisturizing body-care step. Its cosmetic role is to hydrate and improve the feel and appearance of skin—not to permanently tighten loose skin.

2. Exfoliate Gently, Not Aggressively

Gentle exfoliation can remove surface dead cells and make rough skin feel smoother. More scrubbing is not better: over-exfoliation can leave skin irritated, dry or more sensitive.

For body exfoliation, Glimmer Goddess® Organic Whipped Sugar Body Scrub 10 oz is a current option. Despite legacy product naming that includes “crepey skin treatment,” a cosmetic scrub should be understood as a surface exfoliator rather than a medical treatment for structural skin aging.

3. Protect Exposed Skin From UV

Daily sun protection helps reduce additional ultraviolet damage. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas, seek shade and use protective clothing when appropriate. Sunscreen cannot erase existing crepey texture, but prevention matters because UV exposure is a major contributor to premature skin aging.

4. Avoid Very Hot Water and Harsh Cleansers

Long, hot showers and harsh soaps can worsen dryness. Keep bathing comfortable rather than hot and moisturize soon afterward to help reduce moisture loss.

5. Give Topical Products Realistic Jobs

Body lotions and oils can soften, smooth and improve the appearance of dry texture. Some leave-on ingredients may also support a more refined-looking surface over time. However, pronounced skin laxity or significant texture changes may require professional options if you want more dramatic results.

When to Consider a Dermatologist

If the change in your skin is sudden, accompanied by a rash, persistent itching, bruising or another unusual symptom, have it evaluated. A dermatologist can also discuss procedures for skin laxity or photoaging if moisturizers and home care do not provide the degree of improvement you want.

The Bottom Line

Crepey skin is common and often reflects a combination of aging, sun exposure and dryness. The most useful at-home approach is consistent moisture, gentle exfoliation and sun protection—with realistic expectations that cosmetic products improve appearance and comfort rather than permanently rebuild loose skin.
