Organic Self-Tanning Lotion Guide: Application & FAQs

Self-tanning lotion creates temporary color without ultraviolet tanning. Most conventional formulas use dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with amino acids in the outermost skin layer. DHA-free formulas use another color-building ingredient, such as erythrulose, for a slower gradual result.

Quick answer: Exfoliate gently in advance, moisturize dry areas, apply a thin even layer with a mitt, wash palms and allow the formula to dry. Self-tanner does not protect against UV exposure, so continue daily broad-spectrum sunscreen.

DHA versus DHA-free self tanner

DHA usually develops color within hours. Erythrulose develops more gradually and is often used for buildable color. “Organic” can describe qualifying agricultural ingredients, but neither organic nor DHA-free means reaction-proof or sun-protective.

The FDA permits DHA for external application but advises keeping it away from the eyes, lips, mucous membranes and inhalation exposure. Review the FDA's sunless-tanner guidance.

Choose the format that fits your routine

The DHA-Free Self Tanner for Sensitive Skin – Glow is a gradual lotion offered in Regular and Dark depths with scented and unscented choices. The Organic DHA-Free Tanning Drops can be mixed into a compatible moisturizer for customizable gradual color.

For faster development, the Organic Self Tan Drops – Fast Glow use a conventional sunless-tanning approach and come in lightly scented and unscented variants. Follow the current product directions rather than assuming every drop formula uses the same ratio.

Prepare for an even result

  1. Patch test before the first full application.
  2. Exfoliate gently the day before, focusing on elbows, knees and ankles.
  3. Shave at least several hours in advance to reduce stinging.
  4. Apply a small amount of plain moisturizer to very dry joints.
  5. Start with clean, completely dry skin.

The body scrub guide explains how to exfoliate without overworking skin.

Application and maintenance

Work in sections with long circular motions and blend lightly over hands, feet, knees and elbows. Allow the product to dry before dressing and avoid water or heavy sweating for the time specified on the label. Moisturize regularly and repeat only as needed for your preferred depth.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends exfoliating first, applying in sections and diluting color over joints. See its self-tanner application guide.

To correct a small mistake, soften the edge with moisturizer and gentle washing. Avoid harsh acids, vigorous scrubbing or repeated exfoliation in one session. Color fades as surface skin cells naturally shed, so patience is often kinder to the skin barrier.

Face application: Use only a product directed for facial use, avoid eyes and lips, and begin with less than you think you need. Stop if burning or swelling develops.

Frequently asked questions

Why does self-tanner look orange?

Too much product, uneven preparation, color buildup or a depth mismatched to your complexion can contribute. Let color fade gently rather than scrubbing aggressively.

How long does self-tan last?

Usually several days, depending on skin turnover, bathing, exfoliation and moisturizing.

Does self-tanner prevent sunburn?

No. Cosmetic color is not SPF.
