Cruelty-Free & Vegan Sunscreen: What to Look For

Choosing a sunscreen that fits your values should not mean compromising on sun protection. If you prefer vegan and cruelty-free skincare, start with those ethical standards—but still judge the sunscreen by the same performance basics dermatologists recommend: broad-spectrum protection, adequate SPF and water resistance when you need it.

Vegan, cruelty-free and effective are different questions

Vegan generally means a product is formulated without animal-derived ingredients. Cruelty-free refers to animal-testing practices. Those terms can matter a great deal to shoppers, but neither one tells you the product's SPF, UVA protection or water-resistance performance.

For outdoor use, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher and water resistant. FDA also requires specific testing and labeling for sunscreen performance.

What broad spectrum means

Broad-spectrum sunscreen is designed to protect against both UVA and UVB radiation when used as directed. UVB is strongly associated with sunburn, while both UVA and UVB contribute to skin damage. SPF primarily reflects protection against sunburn-producing UVB exposure, so broad-spectrum labeling matters too.

There is no truly waterproof sunscreen

FDA does not allow sunscreens to be labeled “waterproof” or “sweatproof.” Products that pass water-resistance testing can be labeled water resistant for either 40 or 80 minutes. Reapply according to the label, and reapply after swimming, sweating or toweling off.

Do raspberry seed oil or other plant oils have a reliable SPF?

No kitchen oil or cosmetic botanical oil should be used as a substitute for an FDA-regulated sunscreen. Older versions of this article repeated internet claims assigning very high SPF values to red raspberry seed oil and suggesting other oils could “boost” SPF. Those claims are not an appropriate basis for sun protection.

Plant oils can be lovely emollients, but a tested sunscreen formula is a complete system. Its UV filters, concentration, film formation, stability and finished-product testing are what support the labeled SPF.

How much sunscreen should you use?

Apply sunscreen generously to exposed skin before going outdoors and follow the directions on the package. Areas that are easy to miss include the ears, neck, tops of feet and hairline. Sunscreen works best as part of a larger sun-safety routine that also includes shade, protective clothing, hats and sunglasses.

A Glimmer Goddess® option

Glimmer Goddess® currently offers Organic Reef-Safe Sunscreen – Broad Spectrum SPF 40. If you prefer a daily facial moisturizer with sun protection, you can also explore Triple Action Daily Moisturizer – Organic SPF 30. Use either product according to its labeled directions.

FAQ

Is SPF 15 enough for everyday outdoor protection?

AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher for outdoor sun protection.

Does a vegan sunscreen protect better than a non-vegan sunscreen?

Vegan status describes ingredient sourcing, not UV-protection strength. Compare the labeled SPF, broad-spectrum status and water resistance.

Can I mix facial oil into sunscreen?

Do not alter a sunscreen formula unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Mixing another product into sunscreen can interfere with the film the tested formula is designed to create.
