Rosacea - Symptoms and Natural Remedies

Woman with RosaceaRosacea is a very common acne like skin condition that is found in people of all ages but is most commonly seen in middle aged, fair skinned women.

Rosacea symptoms include:

  • redness of the face (easy facial blushing),
  • tiny red pimples and fine red lines on the facial skin,
  • rhinophyma (an enlarged, bulbous red nose)
  • eye problems, such as swollen, red eyelids, conjunctivitis, and rosacea
  • Rosacea triggers include alcohol, hot or spicy foods, emotional stress, and heat.

Rosacea affects approximately 16 million people in the United States and an estimated 45 million people worldwide.

However, most people affected by the incurable yet benign condition are fair skinned & Caucasian.

Rosacea may not be able to be cured but it can be controlled.

Everything starts from within so let’s take a few minutes to talk about your diet and the direct correlation between.

"A 2008 controlled study conducted by researchers in Genoa, Italy, looked at 120 patients from a dermatology clinic with rosacea and 60 people that didn't have it," Dr. Chutkan said.

They found that a significant percentage of the rosacea patients had small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO.

There was a higher prevalence of this bacterial overgrowth among the rosacea patients than in the control group as well as the general population."

The researchers treated the patients with the bacterial imbalance with antibiotics.

They found that by eradicating the overgrowth of bad bacteria, about 70 percent of the rosacea patients' skin cleared up entirely, and over 20 percent experienced a dramatic improvement in their symptoms.

Moreover, the rosacea patients who were given a placebo pill and saw no improvement in their rosacea symptoms were later given the antibiotic, and, after taking the drug, they also experienced a dramatic improvement in their symptoms.

The study, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, also revealed that after nine months of follow-up, 96 percent of the rosacea patients remained in remission.

With that in mind, we want to keep complex carbs, processed sugars, dairy, coffee, and anything else that promotes the growth of bad bacteria to a minimum and start adding leafy greens, kale, lentils, high fiber foods, omega-3 fatty acids, wild caught salmon, chia flax seeds, and other alkaline friendly foods to your diet.

Acid base balance is key. Click here for further diet information.
