Face Serums: What They Do & How to Use Them
A face serum is a skincare format—usually lightweight and designed to deliver selected ingredients in a thin layer. A serum is not automatically stronger, deeper-penetrating or more effective than a cream simply because it feels lighter.
What can a serum do?
That depends on the formula. Hydrating serums may use humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Brightening formulas may include vitamin C or niacinamide. Other serums use peptides, antioxidants or exfoliating ingredients to address the appearance of specific concerns.
There is no universal “active percentage” for serums
Claims that cleansers contain a fixed percentage of active ingredients while serums contain another fixed percentage are not meaningful industry rules. Product performance depends on the ingredients, their concentrations, stability, delivery system and the evidence behind the finished formula.
How to apply a face serum
- Cleanse gently and pat the skin dry or leave it slightly damp if the product directions allow.
- Apply the serum according to its label directions.
- Follow with moisturizer if needed.
- In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
You do not need a hot towel to “open” your pores. Pores do not open and close like doors.
Is tingling a sign that a serum is working?
No. Tingling is not proof of absorption or effectiveness. Some formulas can cause a brief sensation, but persistent stinging, burning, rash or swelling is a reason to stop and reassess the product.
Do you need more than one serum?
Not necessarily. Start with the concern that matters most to you. Adding several strong actives at once can increase irritation and makes it difficult to identify which product is helping.
A verified example
Glimmer Goddess® Organic Vitamin C Serum 20% is a current antioxidant-focused serum with plant-based vitamin C sources, hyaluronic acid and ferulic acid. Its role is cosmetic: supporting a brighter, more hydrated, smoother-looking complexion.
Bottom line
Choose a serum for its formula and your skin concern—not because “serum” automatically means more powerful. Use it consistently, layer it simply and pay attention to how your skin responds.
