Combination Skin Routine: How to Balance Dry & Oily Areas

Combination skin can feel contradictory: your forehead, nose and chin may become shiny while your cheeks feel normal, tight or dry. The solution is not to force your entire face into one category—it is to adjust products and amounts by area.

What is combination skin?

Combination skin is generally dry in some areas and oily in others, often with more oil through the T-zone. Climate, hormones, product choices and seasonal changes can shift how noticeable that pattern feels.

Step 1: Cleanse gently

A harsh cleanser can leave dry areas uncomfortable while failing to solve the reasons your T-zone becomes oily. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends gentle cleansing for oily skin rather than trying to scrub or strip oil away.

Cleanse up to twice daily and after heavy sweating. If your cheeks feel tight after washing, your cleanser or cleansing frequency may be too aggressive.

Step 2: Moisturize where you need it

You do not have to use the exact same amount of moisturizer everywhere. AAD guidance for combination skin specifically suggests treating dry and oily areas differently. Apply more moisturizer where skin feels dry and use a lighter touch where it becomes oily.

Step 3: Choose targeted treatments carefully

If you use exfoliating acids, acne treatments or other actives, apply them according to their directions and watch how each zone responds. Irritation can make a routine harder to manage, so adding one new treatment at a time is usually easier than layering several at once.

Is toner required?

No. Toner can be a pleasant optional step, but skin does not need toner to “rebalance its pH” after every wash, and toner cannot physically tighten pores. Choose one only if you like what the finished formula adds to your routine.

Daytime sun protection

Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed facial skin. If richer sunscreens feel heavy through your T-zone, look for a texture designed for your skin preferences rather than skipping sun protection.

Current Glimmer Goddess® option

The Fresh Start Duo – Hydrating Cleanser & Toner pairs a hydrating cleanser with toner for shoppers who enjoy that two-step format. The toner is optional skincare, not a requirement for balancing combination skin.

FAQ

Should oily areas skip moisturizer?

Not always. Oily skin can still become dehydrated. A lighter, non-comedogenic moisturizer may be more comfortable if the area feels dry.

Should I exfoliate the T-zone every day?

Not automatically. Frequency depends on the product and your tolerance. Over-exfoliation can cause irritation.

Can skin type change?

Yes. Season, age, environment and product use can all influence how oily or dry skin feels.
